Players are optimizers; finding the shortest path to victory is information that tells you where your design collapses.
Degenerate defensive stall
Turtling, hoarding, or infinite loops — not the strongest play, but unbeatable and unfun; interesting decisions still evaporate.
The opening-move census
Log players' first 2-3 actions each game; if one opening appears in over 60% of games (or winners' openings are less varied), you've found the highway.
The forced-variety test
Ban the suspect strategy for one session. Richer game = it was crowding out fun. Aimless game = it was load-bearing and needs a replacement first.
The lead-tracking graph
Plot each player's score per round. Healthy games show crossing lines and late reversals; a runaway leader diverges with a gap growing faster than remaining rounds can close.
Why 'add a counter, not a nerf'?
A counter-option turns a dominant strategy into a rock-paper-scissors relationship, which has no dominant move — only a mixed equilibrium.
Diminishing returns as a balancing tool
Nonlinear cost/payoff curves (e.g. 3n − 0.4n² instead of 3n) permit the strategy but cap its abuse, peaking around n = 3-4.
Changing the timing as a fix
Some strategies are degenerate because they're fast, not strong; a delay or setup cost makes them a real commitment.
