Decoding Your Syllabus and Exam Paper

It is the answer key to what can be examined — exam writers may only test what appears in it.

The specification/syllabus for your exact course code, at least two past papers, the mark schemes, and the examiner's report.

It states exactly why candidates lost marks, e.g. writing 'the temperature increased' instead of 'kinetic energy of particles increased'.

The question type and mark value — low verbs (state) = 1 mark facts; high verbs (explain, evaluate) = multi-mark reasoning chains.

'State' = flashcard memorisation; 'evaluate' = a practised answer structure. They cannot be prepared the same way.

Topic, syllabus point, command verb, marks seen in past papers, confidence (1-5), and last revised date.

Stops you studying unexamined content, shows where marks are concentrated, and turns vague anxiety into a targeted weakness list.

Divide paper time by total marks, e.g. 90 marks in 105 minutes ≈ 1.2 minutes per mark.

~20% multiple choice, a required practical question, a graph/data interpretation question, and an extended 6-mark response.

Mark schemes award discrete scoring points, not general effort or length — you must hit the specific credited phrases.
